Lord Bailey of Paddington has today written to the Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan calling for a comprehensive London-wide investigation into historic child exploitation, emphasising the need to support victims and strengthen community cohesion across the capital.
The proposal comes following the Labour Government’s vote against the Conservatives’ call for a National Inquiry into Grooming Gangs, suggesting that local-led approaches are best. Lord Bailey is suggesting that City Hall utilise its unique position and resources to coordinate a thorough examination across all thirty-two London boroughs.
In his letter (attached) to the Mayor, Lord Bailey AM states that London has yet to be the focus of an inquiry of this nature, leaving potential victims without closure and communities with unanswered questions.
In a statement, Lord Bailey AM said:
"This isn't about politics - it's about doing what's right for victims, for our communities, and for London as a whole. I hope the Mayor will work with us to deliver the thorough, victim-centred investigation that London needs.
"First and foremost, this is about supporting victims and ensuring they have access to the justice and support they deserve. Every day that passes without a thorough investigation is another day that survivors carry their burden alone. We have a moral obligation to acknowledge their experiences and ensure they receive the support they need.
"This investigation is also vital for our communities. Only by honestly examining the past can we move forward together, free from fear and suspicion. London's strength lies in its unity, and addressing these historic issues openly and thoroughly will help heal divisions and rebuild trust.
"Finally, this is about supporting our police in their ongoing work to protect vulnerable young people. A comprehensive investigation would provide valuable insights to help prevent exploitation and ensure our officers have the understanding they need to tackle these crimes effectively.”
Lord Bailey AM has committed to supporting any City Hall initiative through his roles on the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee and in the House of Lords, expressing that this matter transcends political boundaries in the search for answers.
